About the Project
Stories of Aklavik is a collaborative student and community led inquiry project between Moose Kerr School and the people of Aklavik. It is a project of rediscovery, retelling, and strengthening community connection through story. The photos featured here are courtesy of Moose Kerr School archives, past school staff, and community members.
The vision for this project was born when high school teacher, Heather Evans, discovered a collection of photos hidden away in the school. She was drawn to the people and desired to learn of the stories surrounding each photo. She brought the photos to her Northern Studies class and it was then that the quest to uncover the names, places, and history began. In the coming weeks students met with community members and Elders and gathered as much information about each photo that they could. Their findings are showcased on this webpage for you to explore. It is our hope that this archive becomes a living history that will be added to for years to come.
Mahsi cho and Quyananni to our Elders and community members
for sharing their knowledge with the youth of Aklavik.
Without them, this project would not be possible.
